Psalm 62: Don’t Set Your Heart on People

Today’s reading is Psalm 62.

David declares he will wait on God alone for salvation. But what other options does he have? One option is people. Maybe people will save him. Maybe his friends will gather around him and accomplish salvation. Perhaps his family. Maybe his army can provide salvation. Maybe his generals or counselors. Perhaps if he could just get the right people around him salvation would come.

However, what are people? A delusion. Breath. Lighter than a breath (vs. 9). Whether of low estate or high estate, it doesn’t matter. What can people do compared to God? The further problem is people are David’s problem to begin with (vss. 3-4). People attack. People betray. People try to topple him like a tottering wall. What happens when friends or family end up being the ones who betray? David experienced that multiple times. David served Saul faithfully, then Saul tried to kill him. David’s son tried to overthrow him. One of David’s faithful counselors conspired against him.

Of course, in modern times many people abandon God not because of God but because of people. Remember, God’s people betray Him more than they betray each other. Sadly, people let us down. Why wouldn’t they? They are sinners. Perhaps forgiven. Perhaps growing. But sinners. Of course, you and I are sinners too. Have you ever let anyone down? Have you ever sinned against someone? I have. I know you have also. Should others abandon God because we sinned? Why would we abandon God because others sinned?

The point is not to isolate from people. The point is not to ignore people. God sometimes works through people as His instruments of grace, strength, and support. The point is to let people keep their proper place. If God uses them to help us, then receive His help through them. If they betray God and us, remember God is our hope, not them. God is our support, not them. Why would we abandon God simply because other people have as well. Hang on to God no matter what people do. In fact, hang on to God no matter what even God’s people do.

Salvation comes from God alone. Set your heart on Him, not people.

Tomorrow’s reading is Psalm 62.
