Let Us Grow

Today’s reading is Hebrews 6.

Last week’s chapter ended with a bit of a rebuke. The original audience of this letter was struggling with maturity. Though they should have been teachers already, they needed to be reminded of the basic principles. They needed practice. They needed training. They needed discernment.

With the above in mind, the beginning of this week’s chapter is a bit surprising. We might expect our author to say, “Therefore, let us repeat the basic principles and rehash the elementary doctrine of Christ before we go on to maturity.” That, however, is the exact opposite of what he writes. “Therefore let us leave the elementary doctrine of Christ and go on to maturity…”

Certainly, we always need to know the elementary doctrines. We always need to be reminded of the basic principles. But we always need to grow. It is true if we become dull of hearing we will need to be constantly reminded of the milk of the word. But if we only ever drink the milk of the word, we will never grow to handle the solid food.

The old adage about the tree applies here. There is no neutral territory. If we aren’t growing, we are dying. We need to grow.

Let’s keep reading. Let’s keep studying. Let’s keep learning. Let’s keep growing.

Tomorrow’s reading is Hebrews 6.
