1 John 1: God is Light

Today’s reading is 1 John 1.

John kicks off this sermon by summarizing the message. He says this message is what he heard from Jesus and it is the message he wants to pass on to his audience:

God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

1 John 1:5 (ESV)

What a summary.

John will, of course, draw conclusions from this message. He will address errors in light of this message. He will provide instruction based on this message.

But for now, let’s simply bask in the message. God is light. As light does, He scatters darkness. As light does, He warms and comforts. As light does, He exposes clearly the path. As light does, He reveals obstacles so we can avoid them. As light does, He clarifies. As light does, He shows all we need to know and all we need to see.

James wanted us to know this same truth about God. In James 1:17, he wrote:

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change (ESV).

God is light. He shows us the way. He makes it clear. Certainly, understanding God’s Word takes work. I’m not saying He spoon feeds us. But we can rest easy knowing God is not attempting to confuse us or hide the truth from us. As we understand His Word, He shows us precisely the way to Him and to life in Him. He knows the way. He is the light.

Praise the Lord!
