Psalm 75: God Will Judge at the Right Time

Today’s reading is Psalm 75.

In Psalm 74, the psalmist asked several time-based questions:

  • O God, why do you cast us off forever? (vs. 1)
  • There is no longer any prophet, and there is none among us who knows how long? (vs. 9)
  • How long, O God, is the foe to scoff? (vs. 10a)
  • Is the enemy to revile your name forever? (vs. 10b)

In Psalm 75:2, God responds.

At the set time that I appoint
I will judge with equity (ESV).

The psalmist didn’t understand why judgment of enemies and deliverance of God’s people hadn’t happened yet. Surely enough time had passed. It’s hard to be patient in the middle of the turmoil. But God explains, “I have a time set.”

We need to know the same thing. We look around the world and see sin grow. We see wickedness expand and seem to have control and power. We may even experience hardship and persecution at their hands. We may wonder why God isn’t doing something yet. We may just be struggling with natural hardship that goes along with living in this sin-distorted world. Personal tragedies, interpersonal hardships, even natural disasters abound in this life. We wonder when God will do something about them. Sometimes the question isn’t about us but just about the world in general. We see many people suffering in hardship, often because of the sins of others, but sometimes just because of the way the world works. “How long?” we ask. “Why doesn’t God do something right now?”

And some even use this delay as a reason to deny God’s goodness and/or His existence. However, God explains, “At the set time that I appoint I will judge with equity.” God is going to come at the right time and offer the right judgment. He goes on to explain He is the one that keeps this earth from completely toppling. Don’t boast against God as if you know better how to run this world. He created it. He created us. He knows.

God will judge at just the right time for the best outcome for all of us.

Praise the Lord!
