Psalm 75: Keep Praying

Today’s reading is Psalm 75.

Why keep praying? I mean, I’ve prayed and prayed and prayed and life still stinks. Hardships abound. Enemies prosper. Folks around me declare God isn’t even real and if He is, He isn’t good. Sometimes I’m tempted to believe them.

Yet, the psalmist gives the reason to keep praying.

For not from the east or from the west
and not from the wilderness comes lifting up,
but it is God who executes judgment,
putting down one and lifting up another.

Psalm 75:6-7 (ESV)

Here’s the thing. Even if the worst statements about God made by His biggest detractors is true, He is in charge of the judging and the exalting. Even if I’m convinced God is directly behind all my hardships, He is the only one who can do anything about them. He is the only one who can lift me up out of my troubles. He is the only who can save and deliver. He is the one who will judge. I want to be on His side.

I am thankful, of course, the rest of this psalm and Scripture demonstrates He does these things in equity, fairness, justice, and rightness. As Abraham knew, the judge of the all the earth will do what is right.

I encourage you to continue praying even when you’ve given up, realizing God is the only real help you have. No deliverance is coming from the east. None is coming from the west. There is no savior waiting for the right moment to come out of the desert. You have God. He is the only hope. As Paul explained in 1 Timothy 4:10, God is the Savior of all people. Nobody will be saved by anybody but God. However, He will only save those who believe Him.

Believe Him. Keep praying to Him. He will exalt you at the right time.

Praise the Lord!
