Today’s reading is 1 John 4.
Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
1 John 4:4 (ESV)
God has given us His Spirit (see 1 John 4:13). No matter how strong the spirit of antichrist seems to be, we are stronger. Remember, antichrist is not some world leader we are waiting to see come on the scene just a few years before the world’s end. Antichrist has been here since the first century and continues today. Antichrist is essentially the spirit of Satan, denying Jesus. All the forces in the world today arrayed to convince people to turn away from Jesus are antichrist.
At times, it feels like the spirit of the atheists, skeptics, false teachers, and proponents of error are greater than God’s truth. John explains that is not the case. The Spirit of God within us is stronger. Let us hang on to Jesus. Let us hang on to God’s Spirit. Let us hang on to the teaching that comes from the apostles and prophets recorded for us in our Bibles. Yes, the world will listen to those who are antichrist. However, recall that the world is passing away and all that is in it and from it (see 1 John 2:15-17). We are not from the world. We will look different. We will sound different. We will behave different. And the world will hate us for it and attack us. But we will survive because our Spirit is greater than theirs. Our God abides forever.
