Psalm 69: Give Me Patience, Lord, and Quick!

Today’s reading is Psalm 69.

What faith David demonstrates in Psalm 69:13:

But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord.
At an acceptable time, O God
in the abundance of your steadfast love answer me in your saving faithfulness (ESV).

As if to say, “Lord, on your timetable. I’ll wait for you. I know You’ll respond at the best possible time.” How hard is that to pray?

However, keep reading and notice Psalm 69:17:

Hide not your face from your servant,
for I am in distress; make haste to answer me (ESV).

That sounds more like my praying. “Give me patience, Lord. But make it quick.”

This is the struggle of our faith. We know intellectually by faith God will give us good gifts at the moment when they are best for us. But in the middle of the turmoil, we want resolution right now.

I guess this is one of those places where we use that good Bible study word “tension.” We feel the tension within us between the faith we know we should have in God, His working, His timetable and the desperate need we feel in the moment that if He doesn’t do something right now, we’re not going to make it.

This psalm doesn’t solve that tension or take it away. But it comforts me to see David in the middle of that same tension. It comforts me to see a God-inspired prayer in the middle of that tension.

I can keep praying. I’m thankful.

Tomorrow’s reading is Psalm 69.
