Psalm 79: It’s Not About Us

Today’s reading is Psalm 79.

I love the way Psalm 79 starts. Or rather, I love the way it doesn’t start. The psalmist did not begin, “O God, the nations have come into my inheritance; they have destroyed my home; they have laid my home town in ruins. They have given the bodies of my family to the birds of the heavens for food, the flesh of my friends to the beasts of the earth.” From the perspective of the psalmist, all this was also true. However, the psalmist realized this was not the fundamental perspective.

No. What the truly, fundamentally wrong occurrence was, “O God, the nations have come into your inheritance; they have defiled your holy temple; they have laid Jerusalem in ruins. They have given the bodies of your servants to the birds of the heavens for food, the flesh of your faithful to the beasts of the earth.”

And in this difference, we discover the fundamental nature of reality and life. We can get confused about this. So much of what we do every day is about us. That is only natural. But we need to remember, life is not about us. Rather, we should be about God.

It’s God’s city, God’s people, God’s inheritance, God’s name that matter. My life is not about me. This life is not about us. When I make it about me, when we make it about us, we’ve missed the point.

Who will your day be about today?

Tomorrow’s reading is Psalm 79.
